South African West Coast Property (Houses & Plots)for sale

Escape from the crime, grime and slime to the West Coast.

Why move to the West Coast?

Safety, safety, safety

We are blessed, particularly in Velddrif, with very low crime.  The goodwill between people is easy to feel as you stroll the streets, kids can ride bicycles and fish.  We have never had a hijacking in Velddrif, one house was left unlocked for 3 years without mishap (although I wouldn't recommend it).

Life's a beach and then you braai

If you look at the map

you'll see that we are at the southern end of St. Helena Bay, comparatively sheltered from the South-easter which comes in off the sea at Langebaan and gets warmed, partly diverted and calmed by the hills around Vredenburg.

Wonderful Weather

Velddrif gets only 1/10th of Cape Town's annual rainfall, so in winter 9 times out of 10 we braai while their heavens cry.  When you look at the TV map notice that the little area around St. Helena Bay is usually rain free.  Our morings are glorious and usually wind free.

Furthermore there are literally miles of unspoilt, white beaches for you to enjoy.  If you're not enjoying the river, the marina or the Wine Route.

Great Sailing

Both Bertie Reed and John Martin have said that St. Helena Bay provide the best sailing on the SA coast.  Off-shore breezes, shelter from the Atlantic swells, the largest bay on the West Coast of Africa.

Prolific Bird life

Since the Berg River enter St. Helena Bay at Laaiplek, here we see land, sea and river birds all in one area.  From Fish Eagles to Sunbirds, Flamingoes to Glossy Ibis this is the place to see them by just looking out your window.

Fine Fishing

One of the biggest upwellings in the world occurs when the South-Easter blows the waer off Stompneuse  Point out to see.  The nutrients brought up provide food for algea and then plankton which feeds the surface fish who feed game fish.  Come fishing in the river or the bay or out at sea.

The Great Berg River is really great

Yes indeed this is a wonderful river.  Go up for 56km.  The water is warm as toast in summer.  Fish abound, from grey mullet to kob as big as you are.  What a wonderful asset to your life the river is.

The Wine Route

Darling, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Porterville, Wellington, Riebeek Castille and many other renowned wine locales are our neighbours.  Go find bargains in wine right on your doorstep, become a connoisseur.  Bring your investments in wine to the home we help you find here and talk knowledgeably and at great length.

A Wonderful Marina

Port Owen is one of the best marinas in the country.  Being a couple of kilometres inland it gives you just enough time to furl your sales before coming into the marina.  The fact tha there is no wave action means your boat is safe no matter what storms may blow.

Anti-fouling lasts twice as long as usual in pure salt-water conditions since in winter the water turns quite fresh.

Building Blog – How to choose a builder

Lesson 1   All square metres are not equal.

The first thing to remember when calling for quotes from builders is that just because you are giving them the same plan to quote on they are not necessarily quoting on the same product.

There is a well-built, well-supervised square metre of house and a square metre thrown together by unskilled labour, dodgy workmanship and not the correct materials or quantities thereof.  How make sure you are not the recipient of "Faulty Towers"?

Make sure the builders quote includes what you pay for. It helps by comparing various quotes from different builders. Check the builder's reputation; is he registered with governmental and other bodies that put him in touch of latest techniques and materials?  Ask for references, satisfied customers whose houses have been completed at least three months.

Trust Accounts whose can you trust?

Since the latest scandals involving deposits in Trust Accounts, you are warned to insist that your deposit is put into the Attorney's trust account rather than the estate agents'.  Gideon Estates has been doing this ever since we started, the rest must catch up.

The Holiday 23 World Championship

Once again the Holiday 23s held their world championship on St Helena Bay as it is the best sailing waters on the South African coast (according to Bertie Reed and John Martin).

Twenty-eight boats took part which makes it a very impressive field for a class of boats no longer being manufactured.

Hosted at Port Owen a good time was had by all.

" I was blown away by the hospitality at Port Owen Yacht Club" said one competitor.  Brilliantly organised by Johan Hartman and our Harbourmaster Pat Wesson many entrants said it was the best organised regatta they'd attended.

Shouldn't your regatta be held here?  Of course it should.  Great weather, good winds, calm sea and a well stocked yacht club bar.  Come!  For more on the holiday worlds, go to their site
