The announcement that the Western Cape is to reorganise its tourism authorities yet again, is not unwelcome but the manner in which they propose doing this is. It will see the end of Cape Town Tourism in its present form yet again, if the plan goes ahead.

Before you close this email – if you're outside the Western Cape or if you think tourism authorities don't affect you – something to bear in mind is the fact that none of SA's provincial tourism authorities have fulfilled their potential. If the Western Cape can get it right, there will be spin-offs for the rest of SA. If the Western Cape can't, then you will see the same-old, same-old inadequacies you're used to.

Western Cape tourism MEC Winde's plan calls for provincial and city tourism authorities to be combined into a single structure. Now that's dumbing down if you've ever seen it – his provincial organisation is as bad as Cape Town Tourism is good. Brand Cape Town will be sacrificed to strengthen the Provincial brand. But it's city or town brands that count, not provinces.

We can't allow this to happen.
